What We Know About the New Disney Adventure Cruise Ship

The under-construction Global Dream was set to be the largest cruise ship by passenger volume when Hong Kong’s Dream Cruises filed for bankruptcy. The ships were planned to use artificial intelligence and robots for many customer-facing services, with extensive use of voice and face recognition. The pre-Disney design provided for 2,350 passenger cabins allowing for 9,000 passengers, 4,700 of those in lower berths. Disney's announcement of the acquisition stated her expected passenger capacity to be around 6,000 passengers, with a crew of approximately 2,300.

Disney Treasure and Disney Wish

The all-new Disney Adventure ship, which saw its big name reveal at the 2023 Destination D23 event, is poised to join the existing six ships (yes, we’re already including the soon-to-sail Disney Treasure!) in the near future. However, because the Disney Adventure is so new, there’s not a whole lot of information available about this upcoming ship. November 22, 2019, the 216 meters long central ship of the cruise liner “Global Dream” under construction was undocked from the MV shipyard in Warnemuende near Rostock, northeastern Germany. The first part of the ship was constructed in Warnemuende and was conveyed to Wismar, northeastern Germany, where it was transported on November 23, 2019.

Due to the temporary closure of the shipyard in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the delivery of both Global-class ships was expected to be delayed. On November 16, 2022, Disney Cruise Line purchased the Global Dream for €40 million, a discount from the original value of €1.8 billion. On September 8, 2023, the seventh ship was officially announced as the Disney Adventure at the Destination D23 Expo.

The addition of the Disney Adventure, homeporting for at least five years beginning in 2025, will bring even more families to this vibrant destination. Global Dream was already designed to sail throughout Asia, so it’s also likely Disney Adventure will retain some of the fixtures to meet the expectations of the Singaporean market. The final steps in construction of the ship will continue to be completed in the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany.

Major components of the ships were constructed at both shipyards, with assembly taking place in Wismar. Construction was scheduled to take just under three years, with the first ship to be delivered in late 2020 and the second in late 2021. We can guess, though, based on the name of the ship that this DCL addition will be themed around the spirit of adventure.

According to Disney, Adventure Bay will also double as an entertainment stage that will showcase water-based entertainment that combines fountains, music, lights, and special effects. Few details have been released on fitout of the ship that remained unfinished at the time of sale. However, with Disney Adventure being much larger than any other Disney ship, guests can expect a lot more variety in new and reimagined Disney spaces. The 189,000-tonne ship, worth a reported US$1.8billion ($2.4 billion) if complete, was sold as a hull after the insolvency of Genting Hong Kong.

It was confirmed that it began its transformation into what is now the Disney Adventure in August 2023. Disney Adventure should also have a deeper draft of roughly 31 feet, whereas Wish-class ships have a 27-foot draft. What do we know about the Disney Adventure and its plans to set sail with the Disney Cruise Line?

I’ve learned this is a soft launch and the full experience will be available to guests later this fall. Disney Adventure is scheduled to be delivered in 2025, embarking soon after on its maiden voyage from Singapore. In another first for Disney Cruise Line, Disney Adventure will be the first ship based in Asia, which also happened to be the plan for Global Dream. The ship is slated to homeport in Singapore for at least five years beginning in 2025, signaling Disney's intention to cater to the Asian market.

Guests choose where to go next, charting a course toward adventurous locales such as Motunui, New Orleans, Never Land, Sydney and more. Each quest takes them on an expansive journey throughout the Disney Wish as they are prompted to seek artwork, signs and props that magically transform and bring the characters and settings of these story worlds to life all around them. The Disney Wish is the other newest ship in the fleet, is considered Disney’s castle at sea, and features a grander fairytale design. That's because Disney Adventure -- which is being built in MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany -- didn't start out as a ship for Disney Cruise Line. When construction began in 2018, the ship was slated to become Global Dream, the fourth ship for the now-defunct cruise line Dream Cruises. A released exterior rendering of the Dream-turned-Disney ship does display some architectural changes from Global Dream.

The new ride will be called Raiponce Tangled Spin (or Rapunzel Tangled Spin in English) and is themed after the animated movie Tangled. Also along Adventure Way, theme park fans can to dine at a new restaurant called The Regal View Restaurant and Lounge. The table-service restaurant will include character meet and greets with the Disney Princesses. The ship will have capacity for approximately 6,000 guests and will come methanol-ready. There are four issues per year, with each issue is packed full of must-read features, including cruise news, reviews, destination guides and the most enticing itineraries. The Global Dream was purchased by Disney back in 2022 as an unfinished, 19-story vessel filled with various amenities and a capacity of approximately 6,000 guests.

Originally, the 342 meter vessel was designed to offer space for up to 9,500 passengers. Disney acquired the 208,000-gross-ton ship from liquidators after the former owner, Genting Hong Kong, went bankrupt and ceased operations. The ship had been scheduled to sail for Genting's Dream Cruises, an Asian cruise line, with a capacity for 6,000 passengers. Disney has been mum about the work it is doing to transform the Global Dream into the Disney Adventure. Disney Adventure is the seventh ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet and work is currently underway in Germany.

Disney Adventure, came as a bit of a surprise with the November 16, 2022 acquisition announcement of the partially completed ‘Global Dream’ vessel after the previous owner fell in to bankruptcy before completing the vessel. Disney Cruise Line was able to secure the project at a favorable price and within the capital expenditure guidance The Walt Disney Company provided on its recent earnings call. It was reported that Disney purchased the partially completed ‘Global Dream’ through insolvency for €40 Million with estimates of €1 Billion to complete. The Global Dream, an unfinished ship that Disney Cruise Line acquired last November, will be renamed the Disney Adventure, Disney said at its Destination D23 event on Sept. 9. The €2 billion investment will include a previously announced Frozen-themed land, dubbed World of Frozen. If the name sounds familiar, that’s because a land of the same title recently opened at Hong Kong Disneyland in China.

Guests boarding the Disney Wish today will have the opportunity to play, Disney Uncharted Adventure, the all new interactive digital adventure experience. Disney Uncharted Adventure is now showing in the Disney Cruise Navigator app for guests embarking on today’s 4-night Bahamian cruise. Work is currently underway on the ship, previously known as the Global Dream, in Germany. This will be the first Disney ship to sail from Singapore and throughout Southeast Asia. As expected, it will “feature the Disney service, storytelling, and entertainment” the cruise line is known for.
